About Us

the kamloops symphony orchestra on stage in sagebrush theatre

Our Story: A Legacy of Music and Community

Since 1976, the Kamloops Symphony Orchestra has been at the heart of the cultural life of Kamloops and the Thompson-Nicola region. What began as a small community ensemble has grown into a fully professional orchestra that presents a diverse and ambitious season of classical, contemporary, and Canadian works. From intimate chamber concerts to full-scale symphonic productions, the KSO connects audiences with transformative musical experiences that inspire and unite.

In 2002, we deepened our community roots by founding the KSO Music School, providing high-quality music education to students of all ages and abilities. Each year, hundreds of students — from early learners to aspiring professionals — receive instruction from our team of dedicated teaching artists. The School also delivers early childhood programs, community outreach initiatives, and ensemble opportunities that foster lifelong engagement with music.

Together, the KSO and the KSO Music School form a vibrant hub for musical excellence, innovation, and inclusion in Kamloops. We perform not just in concert halls but in schools, parks, hospitals, and community centres — ensuring that music is accessible to all. Our programs reach thousands annually, nurturing creativity, confidence, and a sense of belonging through the power of music.

Our Mission

To engage, educate, and inspire through exceptional orchestral music and inclusive music education — building a vibrant cultural life that reflects and serves the diverse communities of the BC Interior, while advancing a national conversation on equity, access, and excellence in the arts.

Our Purpose

The Kamloops Symphony Society exists to harness the transformative power of music to enrich the cultural, educational, and communal life of Kamloops and the surrounding region. We are a catalyst for musical excellence, access, and innovation — championing the vital role of the arts in rural and mid-sized communities across Canada.

Core Values

  1. Artistic Excellence / We uphold the highest standards of performance and teaching, fostering an environment where creativity flourishes and innovation is encouraged.
  2. Accessibility and Inclusion / We are committed to removing barriers — physical, financial, and cultural — so that everyone can experience the joy, connection, and possibility that music offers.
  3. Community and Belonging / We use music to strengthen the social fabric of our region. Our work is grounded in relationships, collaboration, and a deep belief in the power of music to bring people together.
  4. Leadership in Place / We are proud to lead from Kamloops. We demonstrate that cultural excellence and national leadership can, and must, come from communities beyond Canada’s major urban centres.
  5. Lifelong Learning / We support musical learning at every age and stage. Through the KSO Music School and access programs, we nurture artistic growth that lasts a lifetime.
  6. Innovation and Stewardship / We explore new ways to deliver programs sustainably and responsively. We are building resilient, future-forward models for orchestras and music schools in Canada.

Community Impact

The Kamloops Symphony Society creates lasting change by:

  • Shaping Local and National Identity / We embed music into the cultural life of our region and amplify the voice of rural and mid-sized communities within Canada’s cultural landscape.
  • Expanding Access to the Arts / We reach audiences across generations, backgrounds, and geographies — through both live and digital performances, education, and outreach.
  • Investing in Artists and Arts Workers / We provide professional opportunities and meaningful careers for artists, educators, and administrators rooted in community, purpose, and artistic fulfillment.
  • Enriching Lives Through Education / The KSO Music School offers accessible, high-quality music education that supports students’ personal, artistic, and academic development.
  • Building Stronger Communities / We use music to cultivate empathy, joy, understanding, and shared experience — essential ingredients for vibrant and resilient communities.
  • Shaping a National Conversation / We model how orchestras and music schools can thrive outside major centres — demonstrating that world-class artistry, inclusive pedagogy, and innovative leadership are possible anywhere.

We advocate for a more equitable and representative arts ecosystem across Canada — one that values regional voices, invests in rural cultural infrastructure, and recognizes music as a public good.

Artistic Vision

At the heart of the KSO & KSO Music School is a belief in the expressive power of orchestral music — music that brings people together, tells stories, and inspires deep connection. The orchestra is our artistic foundation: a living, evolving form that enables us to explore the full range of human emotion, experience, and imagination. Through it, we honour tradition, celebrate innovation, and create moments of profound beauty.

But we also recognize that the musical needs of our community are as diverse and dynamic as the people who call this region home. Our artistic intent reaches beyond the concert hall to embrace a broader musical ecosystem — one that reflects local voices, connects across genres and cultures, and responds to the spirit of our time and place.

We commit to:

  • Centering the orchestra as a vehicle for both tradition and transformation / performing the great works of the past alongside new, diverse, and underrepresented voices.
  • Creating space for artistic expression in many forms / from chamber music to cross-genre collaborations, multimedia projects, and community-based performance.
  • Telling stories that matter here / drawing on the unique cultural, historical, and geographic identity of the Thompson-Nicola region and the BC Interior.
  • Elevating Canadian artistry / by commissioning, showcasing, and partnering with artists from across Canada, especially those rooted in rural, Indigenous, and equity-deserving communities.
  • Engaging audiences as participants, not just observers / through accessible, interactive, and immersive experiences that reflect the richness of our collective imagination.

We believe that when orchestral institutions open themselves to new ways of creating and listening, they become not just keepers of tradition — but catalysts for discovery, dialogue, and belonging. In Kamloops, we are building an artistic practice that is both rooted and restless: grounded in excellence, shaped by community, and open to the world.
