Our Story:
50 Years Inspired by Here

For five decades, the Kamloops Symphony Orchestra has shaped and been shaped by the spirit of Kamloops and the BC Interior. Founded in 1976 as a grassroots ensemble, the KSO has evolved into a fully professional orchestra known for ambitious programming, Canadian voices, and performances that resonate with the community that built us.

Our 50th anniversary marks more than a milestone. It marks a renewed commitment to being an orchestra that reflects its place: bold, connected, and impossible to mistake as being from anywhere else. From symphonic concerts to chamber series, from jazz and new music to collaborations across arts disciplines, our work is driven by the creative energy and lived experiences of the region. We call it Inspired by Here — a belief that meaningful musical experiences grow from local culture, curiosity, and collaboration.

The KSO Music School, launched in 2002, expands this mission beyond the stage. Serving hundreds of learners annually, the School provides high-caliber instruction, ensembles, and outreach for students of all ages and abilities. It is a pipeline for talent, a gateway to participation, and a platform for lifelong creativity.

Today, the KSO + Music School operate as a catalyst for performance, education, and civic engagement. We play in concert halls and classrooms, parks and hospitals, community centers and cultural venues. We work to make music accessible, visible, and relevant —especially for young people and communities that have been historically underserved.

Our next 50 years will focus on deeper regional reach, stronger partnerships, new ideas, and new audiences. Above all, we will remain Inspired by Here, empowered by the people, stories, and landscapes that make this place extraordinary.

Our Purpose

To shape vibrant, connected communities across the BC Interior through music as a shared public good; deepening belonging, cultivating talent, and positioning our region as a hub for cultural development and innovation.

Our Mission

To champion the cultural life of the BC Interior through dynamic musical performance and transformative learning that care for our communities, expand access, and celebrate the region’s creative leadership and cultural identity.

Our Vision

We envision a future where the BC Interior’s communities are more connected, resilient, and inspired because music is part of everyday life. We see people of all ages and backgrounds sharing in meaningful artistic experiences, discovering new ways to express themselves, and finding belonging through participation in music. When our communities thrive in this way, they set an example for what is possible beyond our region — showing how investment in local music can strengthen identity, foster connection, and build cultural leadership. Our success is measured by the change we create here at home: deeper belonging, broader access, and stronger cultural vitality in every community we touch.

Core Values

  1. Meaningful Artistic Expression: We make art that connects, and music that is deeply felt, courageously created, and meaningful to all who experience it.

  2. Accessibility + Inclusion: We are committed to removing barriers — physical, financial, and cultural — so that everyone can experience the joy, connection, and possibility that music offers.

  3. Community + Belonging: We use music to strengthen the social fabric of our region. Our work is grounded in relationships, collaboration, and a deep belief in the power of music to bring people together.

  4. Leadership in Place: We are proud to lead from Kamloops. We demonstrate that meaningful artistic expression and national leadership can — and must — come from communities beyond Canada’s major urban centres.

  5. Lifelong Learning: We are a learning organization, supporting musical growth at every age and stage. Through concerts, education programs + community engagement, we create opportunities for curiosity, discovery, and artistic development throughout life.

  6. Innovation + Stewardship: We explore new ways to deliver programs sustainably and responsively. We are building a resilient, future-forward model for small + mid-sized orchestras and music schools outside of large urban centres.

Community Impact

The Kamloops Symphony Society creates lasting change by:

  • Shaping Local + National Identity: We embed music into the daily life of our communities, positioning the region as a leader in contemporary cultural creation while engaging with and translating Canada’s national artistic conversation into a local context.
  • Expanding Access to the Arts: We reach audiences across generations, backgrounds, and geographies — through both live and digital performances, education, and outreach.
  • Investing in Artists + Arts Workers: We provide professional opportunities and meaningful careers for artists, educators, and administrators rooted in community, purpose, and artistic fulfillment.
  • Enriching Lives Through Education: The KSO Music School offers accessible, high-quality music education that supports students’ personal, artistic, and academic development.
  • Building Stronger Communities: We use music to cultivate empathy, joy, understanding, and shared experience — essential ingredients for vibrant and resilient communities.
  • Championing Music Outside Major Centres: We demonstrate that inspiring artistry, inclusive pedagogy, and transformative creativity can thrive in rural and mid-sized communities, offering a model for orchestras and music schools across Canada.

We advocate for a more equitable and representative arts ecosystem across Canada — one that values regional voices, invests in rural cultural infrastructure, and recognizes music as a public good.

Artistic Intent

At the heart of the KSO + KSO Music School is a belief in the expressive power of orchestral music — music that brings people together, tells stories, and inspires deep connection. The orchestra is our artistic foundation: a living, evolving form that enables us to explore the full range of human emotion, experience, and imagination. Through it, we honour tradition, celebrate innovation, and create moments of profound beauty.

But we also recognize that the musical needs of our community are as diverse and dynamic as the people who call this region home. Our artistic intent reaches beyond the concert hall to embrace a broader musical ecosystem — one that reflects local voices, connects across genres and cultures, and responds to the spirit of our time and place.

We commit to:

  • Centering the orchestra as a vehicle for both tradition and transformation — honouring the legacy of the orchestral repertoire in conversation with contemporary works that express today’s perspectives and experiences.
  • Creating space for artistic expression in many forms — from chamber music to cross-genre collaborations, multimedia projects, and community-based performance.
  • Telling stories that matter here — drawing on the unique cultural, historical, and geographic identity of the Thompson-Nicola region and the BC Interior.
  • Elevating Canadian artistry — by commissioning and collaborating with artists from every region, uplifting voices rooted in rural places, Indigenous traditions, and cultural perspectives that reflect the richness of our country.
  • Engaging audiences as participants, not just observers — through accessible, interactive, and immersive experiences that reflect the richness of our collective imagination.

We believe that when orchestral institutions open themselves to new ways of creating and listening, they become not just keepers of tradition — but catalysts for discovery, dialogue, and belonging. In Kamloops, we are building an artistic practice that is both rooted and restless: grounded in meaningful artistic expression, shaped by community, and open to the world.

About our Logo

At the heart of our identity is something that has always been true about us. We are grounded in this place. We care deeply about the land and the communities we serve across the Interior. At the same time, this orchestra is made up of artists who travel from across Western Canada to come together here. Kamloops itself is a meeting point of rivers, rail lines, and highways. In many ways, we function the same way. We are a junction point where people converge to create something larger than themselves. Our identity is designed to hold both of those truths with equal weight: pride in place and pride in being a gathering point for exceptional musicians.

Designed by the team at MCQUEEN Creative, the logo itself draws from our landscape. The K reflects the hoodoos, the S traces the river, and the O represents the sun. In the negative space between the three forms, you can see the North + South Thompson Rivers joining to become the Thompson River. This is the KSO integrated into the land we perform on.
